FAQ |
- Why is your product different or better from the other products and more costly?
It has up to 60% solids, contains sun seal - advanced UV protection, Dupont PTFE to help prevent surface erosion, citronella a natural mosquito repellent, is indefinitely waterproof and is a penetrating oil based sealer. Our solid color sealer has 70% solids and is a one coat application.
- How do I prepare my deck?
To clean, first wet wood. Then use Rymar Rinseable soap and follow the directions on the box. Rinse, let dry 24-48 hours, then seal. Do not use bleach or bleach related products to clean between coats. Bleach will damage coatings.
- Approximately how much coverage from 1 gallon?
On new wood approximate coverage 200-400 square feet with semi-transparent and 400-500 square feet with solid color sealer. If your wood is very dry and weathered, 1 gallon will cover approximately 100-200 square feet.
- Why don't you recommend using clear on decks and siding?
You can use it, but you will have to reseal more often, especially on horizontal surfaces because clear does not stop graying like the pigmented sealers.
- How many coats do I need?
2 coats - on vertical surfaces apply the second coat 6 months to a year later. On horizontal surfaces apply the second in 60 to 90 days. Horizontal surfaces will need more frequent maintenance and may even benefit from a third coat after a season. Our solid color is a very slow drying sealer.
- How long will it last?
Conditions of application, type of wood, location, exposure being ideal - up to 6 years plus. Horizontal surfaces will require more frequent applications.
- How long does it take to dry?
Depending on weather 24-48 hours, 30 days to fully cure.
- What is Sunseal?
Advanced protection for wood helps to prevent damaging UV protection into the wood, for deeper, richer and longer lasting color.
- Can we tint your sealer?
It is not recommended.
- Can we apply the sealer on the interior of our house?
Yes, with proper ventilation.
- How will the sealer work on hardwood?
Not nearly as well as softwoods. If you do use it on hardwoods you will need to redo every year or so after the initial 2 coats.
- What is the shelf life on your sealer?
Approximately 2 years. The color may darken with age.
- If I have an opened can from a previous year. Can I use it?
Yes, but it may become darker than when first opened. We recommend mixing it with a new gallon to achieve a consistent color.
- Why do the colors come out darker on old wood?
Because our sealer is oil based and does not contain as much pigment as latex paints. Old wood is dryer and more porse; with weathered wood below the surface, which usually doesn't get cleaned, the oils then wet and highlight that wood.
- What is mill glaze?
Mill glaze is the resin from the wood that becomes heated during the plaining process and forms a wax like barrier on the surface of the wood; this can be removed with our rinseable soap.
- What's the difference between flat grain and vertical grain?
Flat grain is the wild looking or bolder grain on wood that does not allow coatings to penetrate well. Vertical grain is the more suttle looking wood that usually looks like straight lines that are closer together and will accept coatings very well. To get better penetration, cleaning your deck with our rinseable soap will help by raising the grain, thus allowing for the coating to penetrate better.
- What is a "wet on wet" application?
Doing two or three boards from one end to the other then going back and doing them again while first coat is wet or tacky.
